Yves Schoenmaeckers is the owner of Omniprint, a printing company located in Schilde. He lives with his family in a separate part of the same building. In 1992 he started printing posters for discos. Gradually his printing business began to grow. By working incredibly hard, but also by choosing to personalize printing.
Yves: 'In recent years I have seen many smaller printing companies collapse due to small profit margins and the cutthroat competition from large online printing companies. To distinguish Omniprint, we focused on personalizing printing. Many printers have an opinion about this; 'that's not important enough, let's just print the large editions'. Nevertheless, I got into it because I noticed that several larger customers were showing increasing interest in personalization.
During the corona pandemic, we saw many printing orders disappear overnight, because our customer group mainly includes advertising agencies and event agencies. We were at a loss. How long is this gonna take? Contrary to expectations, we actually saw the numbers of Foodbag, one of our regular customers, increase.'
We must ensure that all back office data from Foodbag's website is converted into personalized menu booklets.
It started with a few copies
'Foodbag is a Belgian company that delivers meal boxes to people's homes. Customers can choose from thirty different meals, three to five meals, from home every week. The customer chooses per dish for how many people should be delivered. The owner had a design agency, but wanted to go in a different direction. He started cooking meals at home for his neighbors and friends. At one point he was in my printing shop asking me to make a number of copies of an A4 sheet with cooking instructions. No problem of course. That small company has grown into a major Belgian player in the market for home-delivered meal boxes. And we have grown along with it.'

Dennis: 'Every week I monitor the process for automatically creating the menu booklets for Omniprint. On Wednesdays we automatically create the recipe pages so that Foodbag can check them. Every day from Thursday to Sunday we receive the data needed to personalize the booklets via Json files. This means the customer's name and address details, the chosen dishes and the number of people per dish. I add different barcodes to the booklets. A barcode for Foodbag so that they know what needs to go in the box at the start of the production process. And a barcode so that the Omniprint printer knows how many pages of recipes should be in a booklet.'
Dennis Kleijne
Consultant Dialog Group
Printing of more than 250 different menu combinations
'Foodbag customers receive a personalized booklet in their meal box containing the recipes they have chosen. We started personalizing those booklets a few years ago. We did this less extensively at the time than how we do it now. We are responsible for the fully automated layout of Foodbag's menu booklets. From the personalized cover, the name and address details on the back, the chosen dishes, to the number of dishes and the number of people per dish. Just calculate how many different combinations are possible. No book is the same. We must ensure that all menu booklets are correct. Fortunately we have Dennis Kleijne from Dialog Group who helps us with that. Without Dennis there would be no books, haha. Dennis adds flexibility. He knows when everything needs to be finished and doesn't make things unnecessarily complicated. He always thinks about how we can make the process smarter and more efficient.'
